Scorpio Full Moon
The first big happening in May is the Scorpio Full Moon that arrives Saturday night, May 5 (11:35 pm EDT). This lunation is interesting on several levels. The Full Moon happens at 16 Scorpio, which is one of the midpoints of the cardinal axis. Any time we have an event that makes what is called a hard angle to the cardinal axis, it tends to tie our personal astrology into the astrology of the world at large. So we want to look at whatever surfaces at this Full Moon in light of the massive global transition that has been accelerating since Saturn entered cardinal Libra (the sign of relationships) and Pluto entered cardinal Capricorn (the sign of world systems) in 2009-2010. This Full Moon also makes a dynamic angle to Uranus (awakening) in cardinal Aries (the sign of new beginnings).

Scorpio energy is driven to see (or, more properly, feel) beneath the surface of events in order to discern the root motivations and psychological patterns that are causing those events. Full Moons always tend to bring to light buried emotions or hidden energies, so it’s important at this Full Moon to cultivate an attitude of receptiveness to what your soul is trying to communicate with you. Scorpio embodies the fearless determination to understand and accept everything that is happening in the soul or psychological realms, not just what is socially sanctioned or “nice”.

The other fascinating feature of this Full Moon is that it happens in opposition to the Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Taurus that builds to a climax on Sunday, May 13 (Mother’s Day). Jupiter is the archetype of good fortune, expansion and wisdom and I feel that Jupiter’s presence here is going to enable us to access and integrate the soul information the Full Moon is trying to bring into our awareness in a very positive way.

Venus Rx and Gemini Solar Eclipse
The other two major events happening in May are the Venus Retrograde in Gemini that begins on May 15 and the Gemini Solar Eclipse that falls on Sunday, May 20. I’ll do a separate post on these two events as we get closer to the dates, but I do want to let you know that I believe this Venus Rx carries the potential for profound healing. Venus is the archetype of beauty, harmony, sensuality and relationship and Venus is going to challenge us to realign our minds (Gemini) with beauty.

The Gemini Solar Eclipse happens in the very first degree of Gemini. Eclipses act like energy transformers. They accelerate change and often move us forcibly from a situation we have outgrown (but may be reluctant to leave) into a situation that is more aligned with our soul’s evolutionary needs. Gemini is the sign of the rational mind and this eclipse promises to show us a habit or pattern of mind that needs to be updated and upgraded. Since this is a solar eclipse and conjunct the South Node of the Moon (what belongs to or emanates from the past) we need to be willing to become aware of and let go of thoughts, mindsets and ways of using our mental energy that no longer serve us.

The May 20 eclipse kicks off the first “eclipse season” of 2012, which culminates with the Sagittarius Lunar Eclipse on June 4. Remember that things tend to feel a little crazy or chaotic during eclipse season. It’s important to practice staying grounded every day and to practice patience with ourselves and others. Since Gemini is ruled by Mercury, we may experience some Mercury Retrograde-like energies during the three days on either side of the eclipse. If we plan for this, we can build in some extra meditation time and we won’t have to be knocked off stride when eclipse season rolls in.

All in all, May’s energy feels like a big move forward from the swirling and sometimes confounding energy that the Mars and Mercury Retrogrades have been creating over the last couple months.
